次の英文を読んで設問に答えなさい。
The idea of the Renaissance is a singularly complicated one. Historians differ sharply
as to when it began and when it ended. Some see its beginnings as early as the twelfth
or thirteenth centuries; others prolong the Middle Ages until as ( W ) as the seventeenth
century. Some historians date the Renaissance from the fall of Constantinople to the Turks
in 1453, on the ( X ) {that this drove Greek scholars westwards into Mediterranean Europe} ;
others hold that (1)the Renaissance was really set in motion by the rapid printing of books
from movable type, which was introduced about 1451 and became common fifty years later.
These differences in ( Y ) arise, naturally, from different conceptions of the character
of the Renaissance. For example, did it involve, among other things, the birth of 'modern
man' and the emergence of ( Z ) ? Should the rise of empirical science and the close
attention to nature be regarded as part of it ? And on a more trivial level, did it include
a new love of mountain climbing ? Obviously, one's decision as to what the Renaissance was
affects one's idea of when it occurred.
